Polymyositis (PM), dermatomyositis (DM) and inclusion body myositis (IBM) are the three major subsets based on distinct clinical and histopathological features. Since the pathogenesis remains unclear, therapeutic approaches actually comprise unspecific immunosuppressive strategies with limited success and frequent side effects.
