The Effectiveness of Metacognitive Therapy on Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder, Fear of Negative Evaluation and Self-Control in Medical Students with Social Anxiety Disorder

Introduction: Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is prevalent among medical students due to the competitive and evaluation-oriented nature of academic and clinical environments, and it may adversely affect their academic and professional performance. The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) on Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder (OCD), fear of negative evaluation, and self-control in medical students with SAD. Materials and Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest control group. The statistical population consisted of medical students from universities in Tehran province. Thirty-six students were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n=18) and a control group (n=18). Data collection instruments included the Social Anxiety Inventory, the Padua Inventory, the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale, and the Short Self-Control Scale. The experimental group received eight 90-minute sessions of Metacognitive Therapy. Results: The findings indicated that MCT significantly reduced OCD, fear of negative evaluation, and significantly increased inhibitory self-control and initiatory self-control among medical students with SAD. Conclusion: Interventions based on modifying metacognitive processes can play a significant role in restructuring maladaptive cognitive and emotional patterns. Alterations in the appraisal and regulation of thoughts appear to reduce psychological distress and enhance individual self-regulatory mechanisms.
