Abstract:   (6 Views)
Introduction: Migraine headache is one of the most common neurological disorders, associated with disability and reduced quality of life. Due to the adverse effects and prolonged use of conventional medications, complementary interventions, such as aromatherapy, have gained increasing attention. The present study aimed to determine the effect of aromatherapy with Citrus aurantium (bitter orange blossom) essential oil on the severity, duration, and frequency of migraine headaches. Materials and Methods: This controlled clinical trial with a repeated-measures design was conducted on 60 eligible patients diagnosed with migraine according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders, 3rd edition (ICHD-3) criteria, confirmed by a neurologist. Participants were selected via convenience sampling and randomly allocated into intervention and control groups (n=30 per group). The intervention group inhaled three drops of 10% bitter orange blossom essential oil (taking three normal breaths with closed eyes) three days per week (on odd days) for four consecutive weeks. The control group received only conventional routine care. Data were collected using the Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS) questionnaire and a weekly headache diary/checklist. Results: Our findings showed a significant ‘time × group’ interaction for headache intensity (P = 0.010), reflecting divergent trends between the two groups over time. However, the interaction effect for headache frequency failed to reach statistical significance (P = 0.062), indicating that the temporal trends for both groups were comparable. Conclusion: Aromatherapy with bitter orange blossom essential oil can be considered a feasible complementary intervention for managing migraine headaches.
